The Hongkong Government derives a Revenue of about $120,000 from the opium monopoly, about a quarter of the whole Revenue, so that this is an important subject.
The statistics collected differ so widely as to the amount of the trade, that they appear to have failed in obtaining their object "to ascertain whether a sufficient amount was paid towards the Revenue of the Colony?"
